Was Israel Raid On Flotilla Self Defense?; Were Activists not Really Peaceful Activists?

From YNetNews: Israel to UN: Flotilla participants not peace activists

Deputy Ambassador Carmon tells Security Council emergency meeting, 'What kind of peace activists use knives, clubs and other weapons to attack soldiers?' Turkish FM: Israel's hands are covered with blood
    Yitzhak Benhorin

This Turkish flotilla would not have rejected the offer made weeks ago, by the Israeli authorities to transfer the aid, through to the port of Ashdod, to Gaza through the existing overland crossing if it was truly a humanitarian projecct.

"The Flotilla organizers not only rejected this offer, but stated clearly that (and I quote) 'this mission is not about delivering Humanitarian supply, but rather about breaking the Israeli siege,' as Greta Berlin, a flotilla spokesperson told the media last week."

Carmon continued to say, "What kind of Humanitarian activists demand to bypass the United Nations, the Red Cross, and other internationally recognized agencies? What kind of peace activists use knives, clubs and other weapons to attack soldiers who board a ship in accordance with international law? What kind of Humanitarian activists, some with known terrorist history, embrace Hamas, a terrorist organization that openly shuns a two state solution and calls for Israel destruction, defying conditions set by the international community and the Quartet? The answer is clear: they are not peace activists; they are not messengers of good will. They cynically use a humanitarian platform to send a message of hate and to implement violence."

"Let me remind the Council that a state of armed conflict exists between Israel and the Hamas terrorist regime controlling Gaza. Let me remind the Council that rockets and mortars are still being launched by Hamas and others toward southern Israel. Let me remind the council that Gaza is occupied by terrorists that ousted the PA in a violent coup, and that arms are continuously being smuggled, including by sea. Let me stress that a maritime blockade is a legitimate and recognized measure under international law that may be implemented as part of an armed conflict at sea," he added.

I do not have all of the facts, but it seems to me that the U.N. and others' are not justified to make a declaratory statement right off the bat, saying that Israel was in the wrong in this instance, without knowing the facts, and before listening to both sides of the story.   It looks like Israel was justified in this event, but I am going to wait and see as the facts come to light.

Archbishop Gomez on Hispanics in the Catholic Church & Immigration

Some catholic blogs like to give you only half of the story while I prefer to give you the whole story and have a debate on the issue whether you are for amnesty or for closed borders and enforcing the rule of law in the United States.

Here is a Archbishop Gomez on the future of Hispanics in the Church:

CNA: What is your own background?

Archbishop Gomez: I grew up in Monterrey, Mexico. My father was a medical doctor in Monterrey. My mother was raised in San Antonio, Texas, where she completed high school. She also went to college in Mexico City, and although she completed her course, my mother married my father instead of graduating. Education was always very important in my family.I am both an American citizen and an immigrant, born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico. Some of my ancestors were in what’s now Texas, since 1805. (At that time it was still under Spanish rule.) I’ve always had family and friends on both sides of the border.

CNA: As the next Archbishop of Los Angeles, you will be the most prominent Hispanic prelate in the Catholic Church in the United States. What is your view of the state of Catholicism among U.S. Hispanics?
Gomez: The number of Hispanics self-identifying as Catholics has declined from nearly 100 percent in just two decades, while the number who describe themselves as Protestant has nearly doubled, and the number saying they have “no religion” has also doubled. I’m not a big believer in polls about religious beliefs and practice. But in this case the polls reflect pastoral experience on the ground.

CNA: What questions do you see as key for Catholic ministry to U.S. Hispanics?

Gomez: As Hispanics become more and more successful, more and more assimilated into the American mainstream, will they keep the faith? Will they stay Catholic or will they drift away—to Protestant denominations, to some variety of vague spirituality, or to no religion at all? Will they live by the Church’s teachings and promote and defend these teachings in the public square?
Or will their Catholicism simply become a kind of “cultural” background, a personality trait, a part of their upbringing that shapes their perspective on the world but compels no allegiance or devotion to the Church? Hispanic ministry should mean only one thing—bringing Hispanic people to the encounter with Jesus Christ in his Church.
All our pastoral plans and programs presume that we are trying to serve Christ and his Gospel. But we can no longer simply presume Christ. We must make sure we are proclaiming him. We should thank God every day many times for the good things we have been given. But we also need to give thanks to God through service, through works of mercy and love.

CNA: What is the most serious problem Hispanic Catholics face in the U.S.?

Gomez: The dominant culture in the United States, which is aggressively, even militantly secularized. This is a subject that unfortunately doesn’t get much attention at all in discussions about the future of Hispanic ministry. But it’s time that we change that.
“Practical atheism” has become the de facto state religion in America. The price of participation in our economic, political, and social life is that we essentially have to agree to conduct ourselves as if God does not exist. Religion in the U.S. is something we do on Sundays or in our families, but is not allowed to have any influence on what we do the rest of the week. This is all very strange for a country that was founded by Christians—in fact by Hispanic Catholics. Indeed, in San Antonio, the Gospel was being preached in Spanish and Holy Mass was being celebrated by Hispanics before George Washington was born.

CNA: You have said these secularizing forces put even more pressure on Hispanics and other immigrant groups. Why?

Gomez: Because immigrants already face severe demands to “fit in,” to downplay what is culturally and religiously distinct about them; to prove that they are “real” Americans, too. We might feel subtle pressures to blend in, to assimilate, to downplay our heritage and our distinctive identities as Catholics and Hispanics.

I believe that in God’s plan, the new Hispanic presence is to advance our country’s spiritual renewal. To restore the promise of America’s youth. In this renewed encounter with Hispanic faith and culture, I believe God wants America to rediscover values it has lost sight of—the importance of religion, family, friendship, community, and the culture of life.

CNA: What are other challenges facing Hispanics in the U.S.?

Gomez: In our Hispanic ministries, we must understand that we are preaching the Good News to the poor. The second and third generation of Hispanics are much better educated, much more fluent in the dominant language, and are living at a higher economic standard of living than the first generation.

But still about one-quarter of all Hispanics, no matter what generation, are living below the poverty line. Combine that with high school drop-out rates of about 22 percent, and a dramatic rise in the number of Hispanic children being raised in single-parent homes—both strong indicators of future poverty—and I worry that we may be ministering to a permanent Hispanic underclass.

We have moral and social problems too. Our people have some of the highest rates of teen pregnancy, abortion, and out-of-wedlock births, of any ethnic group in the country. These are things we don’t talk about enough. But we cannot write these issues off as just “conservative issues.”

To my mind, these are serious “justice” issues. If we want justice for our young people, if we want what God wants for them, then we need to find ways to teach our young people virtue, self-discipline, and personal responsibility.

CNA: What do you tell Latino leaders?

Gomez: Don’t be intimidated by the truths of our faith. They are a gift from God. Let these truths touch your heart and change your life.
You should own copies of the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church. If you spend a few minutes each day reading these books and also reading from the Gospel, you will notice a change. You will look at the world and your own lives with new eyes.

“Be proud of your heritage! Deepen your sense of your Hispanic identity, the traditions and customs of our ancestors!” I tell them. “But you are Catholics. And ‘catholic’ means universal. That means you can’t define yourself —nor can you let society define you—solely by your ethnic identity. You are called to be leaders—not only in the Hispanic community, but in every area of our culture and society.”As Catholic leaders and as Hispanics, we must reclaim this culture for God.
Being a leader means, first of all, accepting Jesus Christ as the ruler of your life. The martyrs of Mexico all lived—and died—with these words on their lips: Viva Cristo Rey! (“May Christ the King live!”) To be true leaders, the living Christ must be your king.

CNA: What is the role of the Church in the political debate over immigration?

Gomez: The Church is not a political party or interest group. It is not the Church’s primary task to fight political battles or to be engaged in debates over specific policies. This task belongs to the laity. The Church’s interest in immigration is not a recent development. It doesn’t grow out of any political or partisan agenda. No. It is a part of our original religious identity as Catholics, as Christians. We must defend the immigrant if we are to be worthy of the name Catholic.

For bishops and priests, our job as pastors is to help form our peoples’ consciences, especially those who work in the business community and in government. We need to instill in our people a greater sense of their civic duty to work for reforms in a system that denies human dignity to so many. While we forcefully defend the rights of immigrants, we must also remind them of their duties under Catholic social teaching. Chief among these duties is the obligation to respect the laws of their new country.

We need to help ensure that these newcomers become true Americans while preserving their own distinctive identity and culture, in which religion, family, friendship, community, and the culture of life are important values.
I’m not a politician. I’m a pastor of souls. And as a pastor I believe the situation that’s developed today is bad for the souls of Americans. There is too much anger. Too much resentment. Too much fear. Too much hate. It’s eating people up.
In this volatile debate, the Church must be a voice of compassion, reason, and moral principle.

The Church has an important role to play in promoting forgiveness and reconciliation on this issue. We must work so that justice and mercy, not anger and resentment, are the motives behind our response to illegal immigration.

CNA: How should Catholics respond to immigration?

Gomez: Unfortunately anti-immigrant sentiment and anti-Hispanic bias is a problem today, even among our fellow Catholics. I don’t want to over-dramatize the situation. But we do need to be honest and recognize that racial prejudice is a driving factor behind a lot of our political conversation about immigration.

In the bitter debates of recent years, I have been alarmed by the indifference of so many of our people to Catholic teaching and to the concrete demands of Christian charity.

It is not only the racism, xenophobia, and scapegoating. These are signs of a more troubling reality. Many of our Catholic people no longer see the foreigners sojourning among them as brothers and sisters. To listen to the rhetoric in the U.S. and elsewhere it is as if the immigrant is not a person, but only a thief or a terrorist or a simple work-animal.
We can never forget that Jesus himself and his family were migrants. They were forced into Egypt by the bad policies of a bad government. This was to show us Christ’s solidarity with refugees, displaced persons, and immigrants—in every time and in every place.
We all know these words of Jesus: “For I was a stranger and you welcomed me . . . As you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me” (Matt. 25:35, 40). We need to restore the truth that the love of God and the love of neighbor have been forever joined in the teaching—and in the person—of Jesus Christ.
Many of these new laws on immigration are harsh and punitive. The law should not be used to scare people, to invade their homes and work-sites, to break up families.I would like to see a moratorium on new state and local legislation. And, as the U.S. bishops recently called for, I would like to see an end to federal work-site enforcement raids.
The bottom line is that as long as workers can earn more in one hour in the U.S. than they can earn in a day or a week in Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America, they will continue to migrate to this country. Immigration has to do with peoples’ rights to share in the goods they need to secure their livelihoods. We need to come together and find a solution to the complicated economic, national security, and legal issues raised by immigration.

CNA: But how would you respond to those angered by illegal immigration? Shouldn’t those in the country illegally face punishment?

Gomez: As we stress the Church’s moral principles, we need to be more sensitive to people’s fears. The opponents of immigration are also people of faith.

They are afraid. And their fears are legitimate.
The fact is that millions of immigrants are here in blatant violation of U.S. law. This makes law-abiding Americans angry. And it should.
We have to make sure that our laws are fair and understandable. At the same time, we have to insist that our laws be respected and enforced. Those who violate our laws have to be punished.

The question is how? What punishments are proper and just? I think, from a moral standpoint, we’re forced to conclude that deporting immigrants who break our laws is too severe a penalty.

Now, this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t enforce the laws. It means we need to find more suitable penalties. I would suggest that intensive, long-term community service would be a far more constructive solution than deportation. This would build communities rather than tear them apart. And it would serve to better integrate the immigrants into the social and moral fabric of America.

I disagree with Archbishop Gomez' statements on racism and citizens being against immigration.  The fact is people are against illegal immigration but not legal immigration. Illegal immigrants are violating our immigration laws and wreaking havoc among our border states.  Some are even committing violent crimes. The majority of people are not racist and only want people, Hispanics included, to immigrate to the United States legally.  But a majority of U.S. Bishops have stirred up tensions and pitted Catholics against Catholics because of the way that our Bishops have approached immigration or the illegal immigration problem in the United States when they have implied that America has no right to borders or sovereignty.

Useful Idiots For Sharia Law: Ground Zero Mosque Approved

The Ground Zero Mosque is antithetical to the very foundation of America and America’s core principles. The fact that both New York City officials are allowing this mosque to be built, bending over backwards so that it is able to be built and the fact that the Obama administration refuses to step in and stop this mosque from being built is troubling, is a travesty, and is heartbreaking. The fact that Obama, as our Commander-in-Chief, is not defending America against her enemies which are infiltrating the United States is unconscionable.

You know that liberal thinking is really backwards and against America when a presidential administration allows deportation proceedings of a Muslim who is a convert to Christianity, and a former terrorist who served as one of Israel’s top spies against terrorist organizations( specifically Hamas) and then simultaneously allows for sharia-loving peoples’ to build a mosque at the location where an act of war was committed against the United States. This is absurd! The Muslims who are trying to build this mosque have the very same ideology as the terrorists living abroad do today and did on September 11, 2001 when they murdered 3000 of our innocents.

We must stop the further infiltration of America by our enemies!

Father Bascio on illegal Immigration: Evolution Vs. Revolution

Father Bascio has an excellent explanation as to why illegal immigration is immoral. He compares true compassion of legal immigration which helps people all around the globe with the misguided compassion of supporting amnesty and illegal immigration which hurts not only the country from where their emigrating from, but also the country where the illegal immigrants are immigrating to economically.

Mark Levin Releases Email Address of Sarah Palin's Creep Stalker Next Door Neighbor Joe McGinniss

Over the years, I have noticed just how insensitive liberals can be toward conservatives when a liberal violates a conservative person's space or privacy rights, crosses the line in a "joke" (David Letterman),  targets the person's family, stalks the person and their family, and the lame stream media has even resorted to being hypercritical of Sarah Palin.  On the other hand, when something miniscule happens to a liberal the lame stream media and liberals become overly sensitive and act like a bunch of Sarah Bernhardts.  Over at The Daily Caller, Jim explains why a professional writer took "Sarah Palin is the girl next door" a little bit too literally.  He also fends off the liberal sharks' claims that she is overreacting.  She is not overreacting.  This is a most serious matter that is not to be taken lightly.  Mark Levin took a stand and decided that he wasn't going to put up with Palin's stalker, Joe McGinniss, flinging his crap at Palin anymore, he decided two can play that game, and he announced Joe McGinniss' email address live on air.  The transcript of Mark Levin is here.  If anyone wants to send her stalker a message, here is Sarah Palin's stalker's email --  JoeMcGinniss@gmail.com.  I decided to take the liberty to defend Sarah Palin and let this sicko know exactly what I think of him and his actions.

Chris Christie is My Hero: He Tells a Teacher She Doesn't Have to Teach

I love how Chris Christie tells it like it is and is going after the teacher's unions since it is self-evident that some of the teachers are incompetent and inflicting their failed teaching policies on our kids. The teachers who are beholden to teacher's unions are doing an injustice to our kids, and causing a cycle of ignorance.  The failed policy of throwing more money at the schools and the unions must stop!  That simply isn't working!Source URL: http://outlawrepublican.blogspot.com/2010/05/

Another Example of an "Innocent" illegal Immigrant

While most illegal immigrants may not be evil or committing crimes, an increased amount of crimes are being commited by illegal immigrants. This is why we need to have closed borders- to keep out the riff-raff.  The people trying to improve their lives and better their families' lives can come here legally, like in any other country around the world.

Does Canon Law Compel Heroic Acts of Self-Sacrifice?

Over at Journeys in Alterity, Kyle asks a very good question about civil law or canon law compelling a person to heroism. In looking at Canon Law, there are two distinct exceptions in which I took notice.

In Canon 1323 The following are not subject to a penalty when they have violated a law or precept:

a person who acted coerced by grave fear, even if only relatively grave, or due to necessity or grave inconvenience unless the act is intrinsically evil or tends to the harm of souls.

In Canon 1324 The perpetrator of a violation is not exempt from a penalty, but the penalty established by law or precept must be tempered or a penance employed in its place if the delict was committed:

by a person who was coerced by grave fear, even if only relatively grave, or due to necessity or grave inconvenience if the delict is intrinsically evil or tends to the harm of souls.

There are more exceptions to the penalty here.

At first it seemed like the canon law could be asking too much of an individual when their life is at stake but after taking a look at what canon law states and what exceptions there are in accordance with certain knowledge or lack thereof and if one’s life is in grave danger, the Church’s position seems quite tenable.Source URL: http://outlawrepublican.blogspot.com/2010/05/

Good Changes to the Roman Missal

Families of Victims of 9/11 Reject Ground Zero Mosque

I am reposting a very revealing and informative blog post by Patriot's Corner of 9/11 families rejecting the proposed mosque at ground zero with very good reason.

New York, May 24, 2010 — 9/11 Families for a Safe & Strong America (9/11 FSSA) adamantly rejects the plan for a mosque to be built atop a planned 15-story structure that would tower over the site where nearly 3,000 people were killed by Islamic terrorists.

According to the project’s leader, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the mosque and “Muslim-led community center” is to be called the Cordoba House, named after the historic period when the Islamic Caliphate in Cordoba ruled much of Europe and non-Muslims lived as second-class citizens under Islamic rule.

Victims’ families view the imam’s expressed plan to “leverage” the mosque’s proximity to Ground Zero to engage in proselytizing and to “grow the Muslim community,” as shockingly insensitive to the history of the site where their loved ones were slaughtered in the worst terrorist attack by extremist Muslims in America’s history; following the attack, 20,000 body parts were recovered in a nine-month operation to remove 1.8 million tons of rubble from Lower Manhattan.

“Imam Rauf is a Muslim cleric who, immediately after 9/11, blamed the attacks on U.S. treatment of Muslims, asserting that Osama Bin Ladin was ‘made in the U.S.A,’” said Debra Burlingame, co-founder of 9/11 FSSA, whose brother was the pilot of the American Airlines flight which was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon. “We do not accept the Cordoba organization’s view that we need Imam Rauf to lecture us about religious tolerance in a city still dealing with the consequences of the attack that he claims we brought on ourselves.”

Last Monday, representatives of 9/11 FSSA met with Sharif El-Gamal, owner and CEO of Soho Properties, the corporation that purchased the two buildings where the mosque will be built at 43-45 Park Place, and asked him to name the investors in the mosque project. Mr. El-Gamal refused, citing the advice of his attorneys, stating that “this is private property” and that “we can build this ‘as of right.’” The property was purchased with $4.85 million in cash.

Imam Rauf is now publicly stating in a professionally-organized PR campaign that the building will be a community center, “not a mosque.” However, Mr. El-Gamal showed 9/11 FSSA members architectural renderings in which a mosque, located on the top floor of the 15-story building, would have a commanding view of the entire Ground Zero neighborhood.

Equally troubling is the fact that, while the stated purpose of the project is to engage in interfaith dialogue and cultural egalitarianism, Imam Rauf embraces Shariah, the Arabic word for Islamic law, a sociopolitical system of jurisprudence based upon the Koran which supersedes man-made law and which rejects the Constitutional doctrine of the separation of church and state. Islamic countries that embrace Shariah and political Islam are known for brutal policies that discriminate against women, gays, and religious minorities. Shariah law is entirely incompatible with the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment and would violate 1st Amendment protections of speech, assembly and the free exercise of religion.

We feel that the attempt to use our loved ones’ deaths and the painful legacy of 9/11 still felt by New Yorkers to engage in a campaign to reverse America’s core doctrine of religious freedom — and to do so under the guise of interfaith understanding — is a gross insult to the memory of those who were killed on that terrible day.

9/11 Families for a Safe & Strong America asks concerned Americans — regardless of race, color, creed, or ethnic origin — to join us in denouncing this effort to chip away at America’s bedrock principle of religious freedom.

G.K. Chesterton: Fairy Tales, Dragons & Children

Last night, I was watching the show Criminal Minds when there was an interesting quote mentoned at the end of one of the episodes that caught my interest.  When I looked the quote up on the internet I found out that there are actually three versions of the quote by G.K. Chesterton.

The first two quotes are examples of the ipsissima vox ("the very voice")  of Chesterton, but they are not his exact words.

Fairy tales are more than true — not because they tell us dragons exist, but because they tell us dragons can be beaten. -- G. K. Chesterton, as quoted in Coraline (2004) by Neil Gaiman, epigraph.

Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed. -- G. K. Chesterton, as quoted in Raising Young Children: 52 Brilliant Little Ideas for Parenting Under 5s (2007) by Sabina Dosani and Peter Cross, p. 38

    Here are his ipsissima verba:

What fairy tales give the child is his first clear idea of the possible defeat of bogey. The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he had an imagination. What the fairy tale provides for him is a St. George to kill the dragon. -- G.K. Chesterton in Tremendous Trifles (1909)

Gov. Brewer Gives a Tip: Reading is Fundamental

Glenn Beck Exposes Weiner

I first saw information on this new site called WeinerFacts.com over at Another Black Conservative.  He has a great video on his blog explaining about the new site and why it came into existence.  Basically, Rep. Anthony Weiner has made false accusations about Goldline which sells gold, and which Glenn Beck promotes and buys himself.

Even the message board that Anthony Weiner used as a source disagrees with him. Maybe,  Anthony Weiner needs to stuff a weenie in his mouth before he speaks and falsely accuses a person and a company of being frauds or scamming the American people?  But, checking facts isn't something that Democrats are known for doing, so this doesn't surprise me too much.  And, Weiner shouldn't play around with the type of weenie that Clinton liked to play around with because that might get Anthony Weiner in even more trouble than just spouting off his lying mouth.

Here at WeinerFacts, we’ve already shown that Weiner has tried to prove his case against Glenn by sourcing a message board.

We pointed out that the Better Business Bureau and the New York Times might be better resources for Weiner:

“The Better Business Bureau, which has given Goldline an A+ rating, said Tuesday that it was standing by that. A representative of the bureau said it had recently re-reviewed Goldline in response to Mr. Weiner’s accusations and saw no reason for a change. “It’s a company with not that many complaints,” said Gary Almond, from the bureau. When compared with other companies that sell gold, “there was a remarkable difference in how each one addressed complaints,” noting that some of those other companies had F ratings.” –New York Times

But, upon further Weiner-investigation, even the message board Weiner cited as proof of his claims–completely disagrees with him.

What was the result of the investigation by the founder of ‘Rip-off Reports’ into the claims touted by Weiner?

“Consumers can feel confident and secure when doing business with Goldline International.”

Remember, out of all the horrors that Weiner claims to have found–this was his actual “proof.” A message board who found that “consumers can feel confident and secure” with Goldline.

    WEINER. FAIL.

Tom McClintock Teaches Calderon a Lesson on Diplomacy

Are Rosary Beads Gang Related?

Are rosary beads gang related?  Is either a cross with rosary-like cloth beads or a rosary really a representation of gangs or as a norm associated with gangs? I would think not. Both the rosary and the cross are a sign of the Christian faith, represent Christ, and are to be revered and are not to be feared because of their misassociation with gangs. The gangs are denigrating the rosary and the cross when they wear them while promoting violence and committing acts of violence in our society. Recently, there have been two cases where one student was wearing a rosary, the other wearing a cross with rosary-like cloth beads, and the students were asked to take them off by school officials because the school officials felt that the beads were gang related. The two boys ended up getting suspended for refusing to take them off. But, the boys were also wearing the rosary beads to remember loved ones who had died- a soldier in Iraq and the other one's brother had died a few years ago and uncle passed away a couple of months ago. This is resulting because many adults today have no common sense. There is a way to distinguish between a gang member and some person who is wearing these items in a peaceful manner. Plus, these kids were not bothering anyone or causing any harm to anyone by wearing the beads. One of the students was pummeled by some gang members because they thought that he was in another gang, but there is no proof that he is in a gang. From what I know neither child is in a gang. But, with regards to the child who was beaten up in school, what if a Muslim student was carrying the Koran and a bunch of students beat him/her up because they thought he or she was a terrorist? Would the school ban the Koran from being brought into school? Or, would the school be facing a lawsuit for religious discrimination? I just think this is ludicrous. Plus, the schools are looking only at the objects misrepresentation and saying all other people are going to misrepresent it also.

Sen. Arlen Specter: The End of an Error

Benedict Arlen Specter has been ousted by Rep. Joe Sestak in the Democratic Primary.  This is the end of an error- a big error.  He is a political opportunist who deserved to lose in this primary.

From The Politico:  "It's been a great privilege to serve the people of Pennsylvania," Specter said with a pained voice to a small but appreciative audience that chanted his first name at the beginning and end of his remarks at his election night headquarters.
He didn't serve the voters of Pennsylvania's interests but rather his own selfish interests. Good riddance, Snarlen Arlen.  Specter retiring is one of the best things to happen to Pennsylvania in a long while.

Bringing Jesus to Planned Parenthood Through Mary

Athanasius Moment?

Cafeteria Catholics (Liberals!) dissent on basic Church teachings such as those on abortion, contraception, euthanasia, the all-male priesthood, and even the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Liberalism is so rampant in the Church today that it threatens to overwhelm its traditions, much as the Arian heresy threatened the Church in the 4th century. Does the Church need another Athanasius moment?Source URL: http://outlawrepublican.blogspot.com/2010/05/

Donald Berwick -- Nominee Loves Health Care Rationing

Donald Berwick is Obama's pick to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services who defends government rationing of health care.  He is has praised Britain's awful health care system called NICE that puts a price tag on a person's life.  I hope the Republicans are somehow able to block his nomination.

While much of Washington is focused on President Obama's Supreme Court pick, Republicans are gearing up for a confirmation battle over another Obama nominee who promises to put health care back in the spotlight.

At issue is Obama's choice to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Donald Berwick, a Harvard professor with a self-professed love affair with Britain's socialized health care system. In his writings and speeches, Berwick has defended government rationing and advocated centralized budget caps on health care spending.

"Cynics beware, I am romantic about the (British) National Health Service; I love it," Berwick said in a July 2008 speech at England's Wembley stadium. "All I need to do to rediscover the romance is to look at health care in my own country."

While Berwick would not have the authority to impose a British health care system on the United States in one fell swoop, as head of CMS, he would be running both Medicare and Medicaid. Given that the two programs alone account for more than one out of every three dollars spent on health care in America (all government programs combined account for 47 percent), private players tend to follow CMS's lead. Berwick himself has made this point.

"(G)overnment is an extraordinarily important player in the American health care scene, and it has inescapable duties with respect to improvement of care, or we're not going to get improved care," he said in a January 2005 interview with Health Affairs. "Government remains a major purchaser.… So as CMS goes and as Medicaid goes, so goes the system."

There are two basic visions for how to contain the growth of health care spending. The free market approach would give individuals control over their health care dollars, with the idea that it would encourage more shopping that will drive down costs and increase quality as has happened in every other aspect of the consumer-based economy. But the other approach, employed by nations such as Britain, is to have the government ration care to meet a global budget.

President Obama rejected the market-based approach, and sought to drastically expand insurance coverage while reducing health care costs. But according to a report by CMS's chief actuary, the new law will actually increase health care costs. That leaves rationing of care based on a bureaucratic notion of the common good as the remaining option for containing skyrocketing spending, and it's an outcome that Berwick himself once predicted would be necessary to achieve universal coverage.

"(T)he Holy Grail of universal coverage in the United States may remain out of reach unless, through rational collective action overriding some individual self-interest, we can reduce per capita costs," Berwick wrote in an article for Health Affairs he co-authored in 2008.

He went on to write that, "The hallmarks of proper financial management in a system… are government policies, purchasing contracts, or market mechanisms that lead to a cap on total spending, with strictly limited year-on-year growth targets."

On a number of occasions, Berwick has praised Britain's National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), a body of experts that advises the government-run health care system on how to allocate medical spending based on cost-benefit analysis. Among other decisions, they have ruled against the use of cancer-treating drugs and put a dollar value on the final six months of human life.

"NICE is extremely effective and a conscientious, valuable, and -- importantly -- knowledge-building system," Berwick said in an interview last June in Biotechnology Healthcare. "The fact that it's a bogeyman in this country is a political fact, not a technical one."

The national health care law that President Obama signed in March will greatly expand the role of CMS by adding an estimated 15 million beneficiaries to Medicaid. In addition, the law contains a number of initiatives, to be spearheaded by the Secretary of Health and Human Services in conjunction with the head of CMS, to provide incentive-based pay to doctors and hospitals based on performance. This builds on the comparative effectiveness research provision of last year's economic stimulus package. While none of these measures will have the same sway as NICE does in Britain, taken together, they will move America in a NICE-like direction, especially with Berwick at the helm.

In 2003, Berwick signed on to an open letter in Health Affairs, called "Paying for Performance: Medicare Should Lead." (Among his co-signers was Nancy-Ann DeParle, the current White House health care czar.) "Our recommendation-to the executive branch; to Congress; to employers and health plans; and to hospitals, physicians, nurses, and other health professionals -- is that payment for performance should become a top national priority and that Medicare payments should lead in this effort, with an immediate priority for hospital care," the letter read. It went on to say that the CMS administrator's successors must continue to show "aggressiveness and commitment" to the cause, noting that, "A major initiative by Medicare to pay for performance can be expected to stimulate similar efforts by private payers…"

The idea of paying doctors and hospitals for delivering better quality health care and of offering guidance on best practices seems benign enough. As the letter put it, "Quality is not an issue for partisanship." The problem arises when government bureaucrats or expert panels are in the position of judging quality, performance, and best practices which get applied across a broad and diverse population.

As cardiologist Sandeep Jauhar argued in a September 2008 New York Times op-ed, pay for performance initiatives can cause unintended consequences such as doctors overprescribing certain medications that are deemed effective and carry bonuses. He also recounted how an initiative in the early 1990s to give report cards to doctors performing coronary bypass surgery prompted doctors to cherry pick patients to avoid the most severely ill cases that could jeopardize their grades.
